While Hospitality Management could come under Tourism Management, there are major differences between them especially based on what each field has to offer and what being a student in these fields would mean.
Tourism Management requires qualities portrayed by those in Hospitality Management, their skills overlap, however their tasks are different. One who does Tourism Management predominantly covers aspects of travel and tourism and merges areas such as business administration, management and tourism industry organization. An example of a career with tourism management could be a travel agent and the duties they perform include scheduling the costs and travels of a customer, designing a travel itinerary, finance the travel costs, making reservations at hotels, etc. including modes of transport, give advice to customers on the various history and culture of the place, weather, etc., look after documents such as passport, visa, etc. Some other careers could also be working under the Tourism department and studying the tourism rate trends, etc. and working towards improvising the rate of tourism and increasing the country’s earning and income through tourism. Therefore, as it is obvious, Tourism Management covers mainly tourism and travel.
Hospitality Management on the other hand is whatever happens during the travelling period of the customer. This could mean during the literal transportation, after arriving at a hotel, when they arrive at a restaurant, a casino, a cruise, etc. Therefore, while the skills and qualities do overlap between the two, there are clear distinctions on the tasks and what they do and when each department comes into play.
To thrive in this job, you need to have personal qualities, which help you work. Most often than not, this job requires physical stamina, manual dexterity, and a good sense of taste and smell. All people that work in this community should be creative. The good part is that there is so much you can do with your created meal, by adding different flavours and ingredients. There is really no going wrong if you produce and present it the right way.
By applying for this job you have to understand that it is much more than just cooking meals every day. It really does require dedication and discipline. There are a lot of stereotypes flying around that these type of jobs are not worth it because of their long hours and low wages. That is a myth, which was thrown out there by our society, as you may not get so much money at first, however if you prove yourself enough that paycheck will definitely be getting higher.
Like in most jobs, you have to realize that you feel passion for this job, you actually fell in love with all the ingredients in the kitchen and you can create things your own way. This should not be a hard task to complete. A lot of chefs, other people who have worked in restaurants for a long time suggest going to work as a cook, before attempting any studies about culinary. Then you will really find out if there is a connection between you and the kitchen.
